This scam run by criminals in West Africa is a variation of a similar scam involving cars and other big ticket items sold in classified ads. The criminal poses as someone interested in renting an appartment or house for an extended period of time. Then he/she sends a large cashier's check as a downpayment. The check is larger than the amount for the rent or deposit.
The landlord is asked to cash the check and wire the extra amount to a third party, supposedly the agent in charge of shipping furniture for the renter. The check is fake and the landlord will wire his own money out of the country if he falls for this scam.
